“What’s love got to do with it” presents us with a host of stars, gearing us up for a delightful romantic comedy that will definitely satiate the appetites of seasoned rom-com lovers!
Zoe (star of Mamma Mia, and Netflix’s Rebecca) is a documentarian seeking a new project. At first disheartened by unenthused investors, she ends up finding an unlikely muse in her neighbour-lovable Kazim (Shazad Latif). Kazim, a successful doctor (which as we know sends our aunties into a frenzy) succumbs to his parents’ desire to find a wife for him. Zoe takes this as her opportunity to investigate the trials and tribulations of arranged marriages.
Unsurprisingly, Zoe’s investigation of what she perceives as an alien concept, ultimately becomes a reflection on her own romantic choices. It must be said that despite the exploration of different approaches to “finding the one” is valid, and the comfortable chemistry between the two leads is pleasant enough, the dialogue lacks nuance.
Yes, romcoms are meant to give you “the ick” from time to time, but many may not connect with the choices made by either of the stars. Combined with the constant references to James’ failed romantic ventures being compared to thwarted fairy tales- the script becomes inflated with overdone tropes.
Emma Thompson delivers (as she always does) as a mother desperately trying to be “woke”. It does tend to get tiresome, but you cannot help but appreciate her persistence in trying to do and say the right thing. However, the stand out performance is handed to us by Pakiza Baig, who plays the grandmother. She brings effortless humour, and heart to the family with her uncensored “dadi-isms”.
In all, the film’s storyline is charming and enjoyable, with plenty of light-hearted moments and relatable themes. While it may not be the most ground-breaking romantic comedy, “What’s Love Got to Do with It” is overall a fun and engaging film that fans of the genre will love.
