Harij Weds Sajili is a bold new Indo-American satirical short that confronts dowry violence and patriarchal hypocrisy through dark comedy and unexpected female solidarity. Written and produced by Angela Page and directed by Prataya Saha, the 18-minute Hindi-language story follows a young bride who fakes her own death to escape a toxic marriage, with the help of a fearless local sex worker.

“We flip the script by making a sex worker the unlikely hero,” says Saha. “Dark comedy allowed us to explore a discomfiting reality while keeping the audience engaged.” Page adds: “This film is not just a narrative. It’s a satirical lens on power, patriarchy, and the hypocrisies embedded within tradition.”

Inspired by true events, the story centres on Sajili, a woman trapped in a dowry-driven marriage to Harij, whose violence and greed spiral out of control. Her only way out is an unconventional pact with Leila, a quick-witted sex worker, to stage her escape and reclaim her agency.

Joining the team as Executive Producer is Nitin Ganatra, the acclaimed British Indian actor known for EastEnders, Bride & Prejudice and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Reflecting on the film, he shares: “It’s a sneakily deceptive film that draws you into a drama of age-old issues of love, sex, marriage, and dowry. The more you get involved with the drama, the more you want to laugh. It’s beautifully made and performed with a lightness of touch and cinematic ambition. Great watch.”

Also on board is Nani Sahra Walker, who recently won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Short with The Last Repair Shop. She adds: “This film uses humour and wit to challenge the patriarchal dowry system in South Asian society. It’s a reminder that solidarity can come from the most unlikely places.”

The cast features Rutpanna Aishwarya as Sajili, Hridaan Saraswat as Harij and Anshulika Kapoor, also serving as Executive Producer and Creative Director, as Leila. The film is shot by Subha Dey and edited by Gautam Pallakki, whose striking visuals balance intimacy with absurdity in a sharply stylised world.

The team is now preparing for release and is open to partnerships with organisations, platforms, and educators focused on gender justice, South Asian storytelling and cross-cultural impact.
